Communication: Sharing Information and Meaning

Communication is the process of sharing information with an individual, group, or organization. It includes the exchange of information, creation of meaning, and transmission of understanding between people. This process can occur verbally and non-verbally, between individuals, groups, cultures, or through technological means.

Communication includes the following key elements:

  • Sender: The person or entity that sends or shares the information. The sender creates, encodes, and transmits a message to another party.

  • Channel: The medium or tool used to transmit the message. In spoken communication, it’s speech; in written communication, it’s text; in visual communication, it’s images.
  • Receiver: The person or entity that receives or interprets the message. The receiver decodes, understands, and responds to the message.
  • Feedback: Information given back to the sender about how the message was received or understood. Feedback helps make the communication process more effective.
  • Context: The physical, social, cultural, or psychological environment in which the communication process occurs. Context can shape the content of the message.
